What is personal care?

Personal care is different for all of our customers but includes all the things that mean our clients  can continue to live independent and dignified lives. Each customer will have a personal care plan that may include:

  •                 Personal hygiene,

  •                 Continence care,

  •                 Support going to the toilet,

  •                 Catheter care,

  •                 Stoma care,

  •                 Skin integrity,

  •                 Medication,

  •                 Eating & drinking,

 

As part of a care package our carers are also responsible for the health and safety of our customers and for all relevant document and record keeping.


What does the personal care training include?

Our personal care training is comprehensive and  covers the practical and emotional aspects of personal care. We understand that if you are new to care your concerns will often be around how to ensure you carry out the care people need in a professional and discreet manner and this is what we train you to do. We put an emphasis on how to work with an individual to understand their preferences and values when it comes to their personal needs. 


Can you give an example of dignified personal care?

When supporting an individual with personal hygiene, for example, when showering….. “I always make sure, doors, curtains, blinds etc are closed, to always ensure that the individual keeps their dignity & respect. I always make sure when moving form the bedroom to bathroom or visa versa, the individual is covered, using a dressing gown or towel, to ensure that the individuals privacy and dignity are maintained at all times”.


Who pays for my training?

Training is provided for free to employees of Caremark  Mid Sussex.


Why do I have to pay for my DBS?

We ask for your DBS payment upfront to show your commitment to wanting a career in care, rather than just wanting a job. This payment will then be refunded after your first 3 months of joining Caremark.


What is shadowing and do I get paid while I am doing it?

Shadowing involves observing other Caremark carers in their job to gain a better understanding of the role. This will help you to see what it is you will do on a day to day basis, but it is mainly for you to build up confidence before you are assigned with your own customers.

Shadowing is paid at the National Minimum Wage.


Why do I need to be able to drive/have access to a car?

It is essential for all employees of Caremark Mid Sussex to have use of a reliable car as we are working in the community visiting our customers in their own homes.
